The Geothermal Risk Mitigation Facility – Announcement of Pre-application Information Workshop for the Second Application Round

Addis Ababa, 13 September 2013- The Geothermal Risk Mitigation Facility (GRMF) would kindly invite interested project developers and project financiers to a pre-application information workshop considering financial support for geothermal projects in Eastern Africa.
GRMF was established by the African Union Commission (AUC), on the one side, and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the EU-Africa Infrastructure Trust Fund via KfW Entwicklungsbank (KfW), on the other side, to help catalyse geothermal developments in Eastern Africa.
Based on the great interest in the first application round, the GRMF programme, which originally targeted 5 countries, has now been extended to include the following countries:
Burundi,
Eritrea,
Ethiopia,
Comoros,
Democratic Republic of Congo,
Djibouti,
Kenya,
Rwanda,
Tanzania,
Uganda and
Zambia.
The objective of GRMF is to encourage public and private investors (project developers) to develop geothermal prospects for power generation in Eastern Africa by providing cost share grants for surface studies and drilling of reservoir confirmation wells. 50 million Euro (approx. 62 million USD) has been made available for such grants. The increase of the fund is planned.
The information workshop will introduce the GRMF programme to potential applicants and will provide a comprehensive overview of the whole application procedure. The Request for Expression of Interest (EoI) and the related submission form for EoI will be explained in detail. It is strongly recommended that potential applicants participate in the information workshop to ensure a mutual understanding of the requirements for Application and thus a high quality of submitted EoI and Applications.
The pre-application information workshop will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 21st October 2013 at the African Union compound.
