Labour’s 21st Century Women Summit

Labour’s Deputy leader Harriet Harman MP today hosted the first ever women’s summit at Labour Party conference.

The event was the biggest political meeting of women in any political party in recent times, bringing together Labour women activists, new members and
elected representatives from across the UK.

Party membership has risen by 35,000, 40% of whom are women. Women now form the highest percentage of the Parliamentary Labour Party ever and almost half the new intake of Labour MPs are women.

Harriet Harman said:

"Labour women are at the forefront of the fight for women’s equality and will be at the forefront in the campaign against Tory Lib-Dem cuts, unfairness and broken promises."

Recent polling has also shown that women are even more worried than men about public spending cuts, and that a majority think that the cuts are being made in an unfair way.

The Women’s Summit debated how Labour will campaign to fight for women and families, as well as debating ideas for the future including on women and the economy, women’s representation and violence against women.

Speakers included Yvette Cooper, leadership contender Diane Abbott, Oona King and Ed Miliband, the new Leader of the Labour party.

News from Chuka Umunna MP
Issue date: 16 September 2010
For immediate release

Youth violence in London –
House of Commons debate today

Chuka Umunna, Member of Parliament for Streatham, has secured a debate taking place in the House of Commons today (16 September) in the wake of 14 teenage deaths and 1683 teenage gun and knife crime victims in the Capital this year.

According to the latest statistics provided to Mr Umunna’s office by the Metropolitan Police, this calendar year to date there have been:
• 14 teenage homicide victims;
• 1230 knife crime victims (non-fatal); and,
• 145 gun crime victims (non-fatal),
in Greater London.

On 7 July 2010 Mr Umunna raised the murder of a young constituent at Prime Minister’s Questions. 15 year old Zac Olumegbon was killed in a planned attack on 2 July 2010 close to his school in West Norwood.

Commenting on the debate, Mr Umunna said:

“It is timely for the House of Commons to be discussing this issue following a difficult summer in which youth violence has continued to take place on the streets of our great city.

“It simply will not do for policy makers to take a reactive approach to addressing this issue each and every time there is another tragic death – it is essential that a pro-active approach is taken and that we properly fund youth provision in our communities.

“Londoners want to know what the new coalition government is planning to do to put a stop to the violence on our streets.”

Shortly before the debate, Mr Umunna is meeting with members of Lambeth’s Youth Council in Parliament including Lambeth’s Youth Mayor to discuss how youth violence can be reduced in London.

The debate, “Youth violence in London”, takes place in the House of Commons chamber from 5.30pm. Parliamentary Under Secretary for Crime Reduction, James Brokenshire MP, will respond to Mr Umunna’s debate on behalf of the government.

In the latest interview with the Labour Mayoral contenders, OBV's Director is in conversation with former Mayor Ken Livingstone. In this exclusive first part interview Livingstone talks about his Conservative supporting parents, his rise through the Labour ranks, and the damage caused to Black individuals and groups by the campaign that sought to get him out of office.

This is a fascinating insight into one of the last political big beasts within the Labour movement.

By ASSAH MWAMBENE

Tanzania and Malawi have agreed to form a joint Committee of Technical Experts that will search, review, and analyze all available legal instruments concerning the common boundary of the two countries.

The Committee of the Technical Experts is mandated to report their findings back to the committee of Officials of the two countries by first week of December 2010.

A Statement issued at the end of the Committee of Officials of the two countries in Lilongwe yesterday said the meeting was aimed at preparing a road map for the reaffirmation of the international boundary between the two countries.

“The meeting was held against the background of the directive of the African Union to all African countries that they should delineate, delimitate, demarcate and reaffirm their international boundaries by the year 2012” the joint Statement noted.

The Committee of Officials meeting which was held in cordial manner, considered the available legal instruments that led to the delineation of the boundary between the two countries by the colonial administrators.

The Committee of Officials also hailed the close collaboration, trust and transparency that prevailed during the discussions over the issues for the benefit of the peoples of the two countries.

Malawi and Tanzania have so far agreed to develop part of the stretch of the Songwe River through Songwe River Basin Development programme in a move aimed at destabilizing and controlling the unpredictable shift of the river course.

Tanzania and Malawi have had border disputes on the Lake Nyasa since colonial times.

Unpredictable shift of the Songwe River course due to flooding and other factors has also made it difficult to determine the border since the two countries are separated by the River.

The Tanzania Delegation in the meeting was led by the Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Human Settlement Development, Ms. Maria Bilia.

H.E. Patrick Tsere, the Tanzania High Commissioner to Malawi , Irene Kasyanju, and the Head of the Legal Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation and a representative from the Attorneys General Chamber also attended the meeting.
