AUC CHAIRPERSON APPROVES THE DEPLOYMENT OF AFRICAN UNION ELECTION OBSERVATION MISSION TO THE 16 SEPTEMBER 2013 PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS IN THE REPUBLIC OF RWANDA
Addis Ababa, 3 September 2013: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has approved the deployment of an African Union Short Term Observation (STO) Mission to the Republic of Rwanda’s Parliamentary Elections scheduled for 16 September 2013.
The AU STO Mission will be deployed on 9 September until 21 September 2013 and will comprise of thirty (30) observers drawn from members of African Electoral Commissions, Civil Society Organizations, the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), the Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and the Permanent Representatives’ Committee (PRC) of the African Union.
The Mission is in line with key AU democracy and elections instruments, such as:
- The African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance;
- The AU/OAU Declaration on Principles Governing Democratic Elections in Africa; and
- The AU Guidelines for Elections Observation and Monitoring Missions.
The Mission will remain in constant interaction with the AU Commission and submit its reports on the elections to the Chairperson of the Commission through the Democracy and Electoral Assistance Unit (DEAU) of the Department of Political Affairs of the African Union Commission. The DEAU has in effect concluded plans as mandated by the Commission for the deployment of the African Union Observers to Rwanda.
