NEW IMPETUS TO AFRICA’S INDUSTRIALISATION EFFORTS AS AUC CHAIRPERSON MEETS UNIDO DIRECTOR GENERAL

Addis Ababa, 09 October 2013: The African Union Commission (AUC) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) have today emphasized the need for mutually beneficial cooperation in industrializing the African continent, given its potential to positively impact the continent’s development trajectory. The two organisations placed particular emphasis on agro industry as a sector with the potential to catalyze Africa’s development.

Meeting in Addis Ababa today at the AU Headquarters were the Chairperson of the AUC Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma and the UNIDO Director General Mr Li Yong.

In the discussions, held in the presence of the AUC Commissioner for Trade and Industry Mrs Fatima Haram Acyl and senior members of staff from both organisations, the two leaders agreed to work together in the framework of the AU vision as set out by Heads of State and Government and the Agenda 2063 framework, as well as to learn lessons from other regions where industrialization has assisted nations to develop at a fast rate. E.g. many nations in South East Asia achieved middle income status in a few decades after aggressively pursuing manufacturing and industrialization. Africa on the other hand is still trading, to a large extent, in basic commodities which do not fetch much money and therefore have little impact on job and wealth creation.

“We believe we cannot achieve development unless we industrialise. We are looking at agriculture as one of the important drivers for industrialization. We have the land, the people and the products. But we need to process more of our products in order to create jobs for the young people,” Dr Dlamini Zuma said as she stressed the strong inter linkages between agriculture and industrialization.

The AUC has prioritized agricultural production, developing the agro-processing and businesses sectors, increasing market access and attaining Africa’s collective food security and nutrition on the one hand, and promotion of inclusive economic development and industrialization on the other, as part of its 2014-2017 strategic plan.

Dr Dlamini Zuma and Mr Yong also looked at possibilities beyond agriculture, such as trade, adoption and use of clean technologies, knowledge transfer to achieve sustainable and inclusive development. They both committed to ensuring that beyond the rhetoric, AUC and UNIDO would be result oriented and work on initiatives that bring concrete change to people’s livelihoods.
