igh Level Event on Aid as Catalyst for Domestic Resource Mobilization in Africa
Addis Ababa, 24 July 2013 – The Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mr. Erastus Mwencha in his opening statement at the High Level Africa Event on Aid as a Catalyst For Domestic Resources Mobilisation in Africa identified the year 2013 as an important milestone for Africa and the Union in pursuing the goal of an integrated, peaceful and prosperous continent, driven by its citizens, representing a dynamic force in the global arena.
The Deputy Chairperson made reference to the 50 year Anniversary of the AU, stating that" it affords us the opportunity to sharpen our vision which reflects a clear determination of Africans becoming fully responsible for their own sustainable development and shared growth through African resources".
Outlining the importance of the theme of this high level event; “Aid as Catalyst for Domestic Resource Mobilization in Africa - Africa Looking Within” as both timely and relevant; the Deputy Chairperson emphasized his belief that a truly sovereign Africa should convey self-reliance and not dependence. This would go a long way in increasing revenues collected from taxes and likewise, the strengthening of accountability systems of tax revenue authorities would ensure sustainability of these resources collected from taxation, he added.
