She is Minister of the Department of Home Affairs as well as a member of the African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Working Committee (NWC). She is also a member of the African National Congress (ANC) Women's League National Executive Committee, National Progressive Women's Movement of South Africa.
