Borough comes together in vigil for Sarah Everard

No woman should have to feel unsafe on the streets at any time of day or night anywhere in the world, including in Barking and Dagenham.

In light of recent tragic events, a socially distanced vigil was held last Saturday in memory of Sarah Everard and in solidarity with every woman who has ever felt unsafe or experienced harassment or violence.

Residents had an opportunity to show their support by leaving a candle on the steps of the illuminated Barking Town Hall. Those not in the area were asked to light a candle at home to show their solidarity and take a photo to share on social media.
We believe you - Key message from the Domestic Abuse Commission report launch

Last week, we launched our Domestic Abuse Commission report at an event attended by over 150 people. The event was held virtually and attendees heard from the Chair of the Commission Polly Neate, CBE along with Nicole Jacobs, Designated first Domestic Abuse Commissioner for England and Wales and Cllr Maureen Worby, Cabinet Member for Social Care and Health integration.

As part of the launch, a short film was shared which featured three local survivors of domestic abuse, who have bravely shared their stories and co-produced our report.

One of the key messages of the report is “We Believe You”. The Commission found that there was sometimes a culture of not believing survivors of domestic abuse amongst residents as well as professionals. We want everyone to spread the message in our community that #WeBelieveYou.

If you didn’t manage to join us, you can watch a recording of the event online. #WeBelieveYou
