The Current Rebellion in Northern Niger : Causes, Context and Actors
A talk with Yvan Guichaoua, Centre for Research on Inequality, Human Security and Ethnicity, University of Oxford
in conjunction with the exhibition Retracing Heinrich Barth by Julia Winckler currently at the Brunei Gallery
This presentation will introduce the historical background and the structural causes of the conflict currently affecting Northern Niger and present its major actors and their political claims. It will particularly focus on the Mouvement des Nigériens pour la Justice (MNJ), the armed group which has been challenging the central government for more than a year now, successfully attacking many of its military position in the Agadez region. We will trace back the origins and the evolution of the MNJ, arguing that the armed insurrection largely stems from a loosely planned process of percolation of sectional grievances and interests, now resulting in a military and political force that Niger authorities have to come to terms with politically.
Yvan Guichaoua is a Research Officer at the Centre for Research on Inequality, Human Security and Ethnicity at the University of Oxford . After focusing on youth access to the informal labour market in Cote d’Ivoire , his research now analyses the dynamics of violent political mobilisation in Nigeria and Niger . He is the author of various articles and book chapters on Nigeria and Cote d’Ivoire .
All talks are in association with the Centre for African Studies at SOAS
