Join us in marking Remembrance Day

Barking and Dagenham will remember those who died in the line of duty and made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms, with a series of remembrance events taking place across the borough from Thursday 11 to Sunday 14 November.

We hope you will join us, either by attending one of the memorial services or by holding your own two-minute silence at 11am on both Armistice Day (11 November) and Remembrance Sunday (14 November).

We ask that you do not attend a memorial service if you are showing any coronavirus symptoms or you or someone in your household is self-isolating. We also recommend that you take a lateral flow test on the day before the event or the morning before you arrive.

Fireworks spectacular at the Winter Lantern Parade

Last Sunday (7 November), 6,000 of you joined us for our free Winter Lantern Parade and fireworks.

There were lots of beaming smiles from children and adults as the Lantern Parade travelled along Chitty’s Lane before finishing at Valence Park, where we held a free event with music, entertainment and a spectacular fireworks finale.

Giant lantern heads featuring teachers, keyworkers and celebrities were just some of the weird and wonderful things to see.

The event was organised in partnership with Creative Barking and Dagenham, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first houses built on the Becontree Estate as part of our Becontree Forever programme.

While 2021 is rapidly nearing its end, there’s still lots of stuff, including free events, coming up in the Becontree Forever programme so check it out! See the story below for just one example…

London Jazz Festival is coming to Barking and Dagenham

The EFG London Jazz Festival will be hosting a programme of concerts and events from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 November on the Becontree Estate as part of the Becontree Forever programme, which celebrates 100 years of the estate.

The programme features MOBO-winning singer Zara McFarlane, who was brought up on the Becontree Estate, saxophone legend Courtney Pine who has just won the Jazz FM Gold Award, and acclaimed film-maker Ashleigh Jadee. The programme includes a family fun musical story workshop and vocal performances from young people in the borough, at a special show at Kingsley Hall.

For more information and to book tickets visit the EFG London Jazz Festival website.
Community Radio Station on the Becontree Estate goes live

Becontree Broadcasting Station is a new online community radio station serving the Becontree Estate and residents in the borough. It’s an open and inclusive radio platform for the local community, offering free workshops, access to radio equipment, and an opportunity to develop your own radio show with no experience necessary.

You could do a music show, talk show, radio drama, interview show, or something completely different! If you have an idea for a radio programme, or want to learn more about DJing and podcasts, or you’re just interested in reaching the community and growing your brand, our Artist-in-Residence Joe Namy wants to know, so contact him on jnamy@lbbd.gov.uk to get involved.
