Brussels G7 Summit 2014 - 4-5 June 2014
The leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission (G7 leaders) met in Brussels on 4-5 June 2014 in the G7 format.
Over dinner on Wednesday night, G7 leaders focused on Ukraine, theirrelations with Russia and their response to the crisis. President Van Rompuy said: "Ever since the start of crisis in Ukraine, members of the G7 and the European Union have stood united in their response. To acts of aggression, we have reacted not only politically but also economically with sanctions."
They also discussed a positive agenda aimed at de-escalation with Russia and stabilising Ukraine. They welcomed the election on 25 May of Petro Poroshenko as President and repeated their support to Ukraine's economic and political reforms. They expect Russia to cooperate with him as President of Ukraine and to seriously pursue a political solution. If required, they stand ready to intensify sanctions on Russia.
They also denounced the 3 June sham presidential election in Syria and discussed the situation in South and East China Sea, Iran, Lybia, Mali and Central African Republic among other foreign policy issues.
