ERITREA:
Eritrea will continue its persistent and
constructive efforts to promote peace and stability
in the region”: President Isaias
Eritrean Foreign Minister in CEN-SAD's Summit
U.S. Congress soundly rejects effort to tar Eritrea
'Techno-Brake' products obtaining good access in
European markets
Implementing major development programs to
combat desertification
Reiterating the Eritrean government's independent
political stance, President
Isaias Afwerki asserted
that Eritrea would not
only condemn any illegal
actions in the region but
also continue its
persistent and
constructive efforts to promote regional peace and
stability. The President made the salient remarks in
briefings he gave regarding political developments in
this region and the world, during the Meeting of the
Eritrean Cabinet of Ministers, Regional Administrators
and Operation Zone Commanders that concluded on
June 9, 2009 at the Denden Hall in the capital Asmara.
The meeting began its session with briefings by
President Isaias highlighting the national agricultural
development and agro-industry plan. Following
assessment of the implementation of the national
development strategy and the progress of action plans
for the first quarter of 2009, as well as the
accomplishments so far registered, the meeting mapped
out future work plan.
Foreign Minister Osman Saleh said that Eritrea would
strive for the realization
of the principles and
action programs of the
Community of Sahle-
Saharan States (CENSAD),
as well as
promote all-round
African development
and unity. He made the statement in a speech he
delivered at the CEN-SAD Summit conference which
was held in Tripoli, Libya from 29 to 30 May.
Stating that the weakness and ineffectiveness of the
African Union (AU) is becoming an issue of growing
concern, Mr. Osman pointed out that due to external
interference, servant regimes and tools, the AU has not
only become an obstacle to resolving African issues but
also a camouflage for their getting ever more complex.
The Foreign Minister went on to say that the organs
under the AU are becoming illegal and irresponsible. In
this connection, Mr. Saleh indicated that the call by the
organization's so-called 'peace and security council'
calling on the Security Council to adopt "sanctions
against Eritrea" is a vivid demonstration of such a
stance.
In a press Release issued on June 12, 2009, The
Organization of Eritrean Americans (OEA) expressed
its satisfaction to see that the United States House of
Representatives on Wednesday June 10, 2009,
overwhelmingly rejected an amendment by California
Republican Ed Royce declaring that Eritrean support
for insurgents in Somalia poses a direct threat to U.S.
national security, and calling for Eritrea to be
designated state sponsors of terrorism
In an interview given on 04 June 2009 by the managing
director Mr A. Teweldemedhin, it was disclosed that
the products of 'Techno-Brake' Company are obtaining
good access in European markets. He told ERINA that
after meeting the local demand for automobile brakes,
the company is exporting its products to markets in the
European countries, particularly Italy, and thereby
saving hard currency for the nation. 'Techno-Brake
Company was established as a reorganized company in
2005
As part of endeavors to combat desertification, Eritrea
is implementing major development programs. This
was disclosed by Mr. Huruy Asgedom, director general
in the department of agricultural development in the
Ministry of Agriculture on June 12, 2009.

Shooting for the Moon
NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, or LRO, and Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite, or LCROSS, rolled aboard their Atlas V rocket to the launch pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida yesterday morning in preparation for launch today. LRO is scheduled for a one-year exploration mission at a polar orbit of about 31 miles, or 50 kilometers, the closest any spacecraft has orbited the moon. Its primary objective is to conduct investigations to prepare for future explorations of the moon. LCROSS will search for water ice on the moon by sending the spent upper-stage Centaur rocket to impact part of a polar crater in permanent shadows. LCROSS will fly into the plume of dust left by the impact and measure the properties before also colliding with the lunar surface.

PRESS RELEASE
Date 17th June 2009
Release Immediate
Food getting to where it is needed in Ethiopia
Despite some press reports to the contrary, aid is arriving to those who need it in Ethiopia and further shipments are due to arrive later this month and in July.
There are very good working relations between the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) and the Ethiopian authorities so it was surprising to read claims by WFP that congestion at the port of Djibouti was hampering food deliveries. The two sides had previously agreed to use two other ports, namely those of Berbéra in Somaliland and Port Sudan, where shipments will be arriving on 30th June and in mid July respectively.
The WFP has awarded contracts to Sudanese trucks to transport food from Port Sudan to Gedarif. It has also awarded contracts to Ethiopian trucks to assume the responsibility of transporting the food from Gedarif to Werota, in the Amhara region of Ethiopia. The Ethiopian trucks were awarded the contract because the road is not suitable for big trucks and the food is therefore transported by smaller Ethiopian trucks. Both contracts were arranged by the joint technical committee established between the Ethiopian government and the WFP.
The transportation of food from Berbera to Jijiga (capital of the Somali region of Ethiopia) has been and continues to be transported by fleets from Somaliland and Ethiopia, contracted by the WFP.
In fact, the WFP has expressed its satisfaction at this new jointly agreed modus operandi, describing it as the best way of avoiding congestion in Djibouti, and this aim has been achieved. The joint committee has agreed on the future transport of food on the basis of this agreement.
On 30th June, a ship called Glory 2 will dock at Berbera port, bringing 28,723 MT of food. It will be transported to Jijiga in the way described above. In mid July another ship will dock at Port Sudan with 24,501MT of food aid. Onward transportation will be carried out on the basis of the successful experience of past months.
Reference was also made in news reports to the import of fertiliser. It is true that unprecedented levels of fertiliser are being imported before the harvest season, and this should not be used as a pretext for criticism. It is one of the main inputs necessary to ensure a sustainable domestic food supply in Ethiopia.
