Ugandans sentenced in UK to serve time at home

A new agreement between the United Kingdom and Uganda will allow Ugandans sentenced in UK to return and serve their sentences in Uganda. Also, UK citizens who will be sentenced under the Uganda justice system will be able to serve their sentences in UK prisons. The Prisoners Transfer agreement was signed on Tuesday morning by the 3rd deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs Al Hajj Kirunda Kivenjinja and the British High Commissioner to Uganda H.E Martin Shearman at the Immigration headquarters. The new agreement is expected to affect more than 60 Ugandans currently locked up in the UK jails.Minister Kivejinja welcomed the signing saying it will allow ease the rehabilitation of prisoners since they will be serving sentences at home.While signing the agreement, Mr Shearman reiterated the importance of cooperation between the two governments on immigration issues to ease the movement of people in today’s global village.Meanwhile the British government has also donated $1 million towards construction of immigration headquarters and rehabilitation of Luzira prisons, Uganda’s main prison.
