MPs Respond to Diane Abbott’s Challenge to Walk Around Hackney at Midnight
The Home Affairs Select Committee will be walked around Hackney at midnight on Monday 4th February in response to the invitation of Hackney North and Stoke Newington MP Diane Abbott.
The Committee is chaired by the Right Honourable Keith Vaz, the Member of Parliament for Leicester East and the members are: Jeremy Browne, MP for Taunton; Karen Buck, MP for Regent’s Park and Kensington North; James Clappison, MP for Hertsmere; Ann Cryer, MP for Keighley; David T.C. Davies, MP for Monmouth; Janet Dean, MP for Burton; Patrick Mercer, MP for Newark; Margaret Moran, MP Luton South; Gwyn Prosser, MP for Dover; Bob Russell, MP for Colchester; Martin Salter, MP for Reading West; Gary Streeter, MP for South-West Devon; and David Winnick, MP for Walsall North.
Diane Abbott said today: “I am very pleased that the Home Affairs Select Committee has responded favourably to my invitation. They will have the opportunity to meet local residents, business people and local police. And they will be able to see Hackney at night-time for themselves. There are very real challenges in policing Hackney but I also believe we have made a lot of progress in making the streets of Hackney safe.”
Chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee Keith Vaz MP: “I am delighted that we are coming to Hackney at the invitation of my colleague Hackney North and Stoke Newington MP Diane Abbott. Policing issues are currently at the very top of the political agenda. We believe that this visit and the briefing that we will get from local police will provide important evidence for our forthcoming enquiry “Policing in the 21st Century”.”
