Through the third and last quarters of 2018, CSR-in-Action, with the support of FOSTER II (Facility for Oil Sector Transformation), embarked on research to review best practice methods for curbing conflict and establishing peace and sustainable development in oil-rich communities.

This particular paper is the first in the research journey, and it x-rays the conflict management strategies adopted by several oil-rich countries across the world. It juxtaposes the strategies employed by oil companies in Nigeria with those of the analysed countries, namely: Peru, Ghana, Russia and Canada. The key stakeholders (oil companies, government, host communities/indigenous peoples and civil society organisations) in the oil sectors of the analysed countries were assessed and their behaviours described to determine strategies that may work in Nigeria.
