Youth violence in London –
House of Commons debate today
Chuka Umunna, Member of Parliament for Streatham, has secured a debate taking place in the House of Commons today (16 September) in the wake of 14 teenage deaths and 1683 teenage gun and knife crime victims in the Capital this year.
According to the latest statistics provided to Mr Umunna’s office by the Metropolitan Police, this calendar year to date there have been:
• 14 teenage homicide victims;
• 1230 knife crime victims (non-fatal); and,
• 145 gun crime victims (non-fatal),
in Greater London.
On 7 July 2010 Mr Umunna raised the murder of a young constituent at Prime Minister’s Questions. 15 year old Zac Olumegbon was killed in a planned attack on 2 July 2010 close to his school in West Norwood.
Commenting on the debate, Mr Umunna said:
“It is timely for the House of Commons to be discussing this issue following a difficult summer in which youth violence has continued to take place on the streets of our great city.
“It simply will not do for policy makers to take a reactive approach to addressing this issue each and every time there is another tragic death – it is essential that a pro-active approach is taken and that we properly fund youth provision in our communities.
“Londoners want to know what the new coalition government is planning to do to put a stop to the violence on our streets.”
Shortly before the debate, Mr Umunna is meeting with members of Lambeth’s Youth Council in Parliament including Lambeth’s Youth Mayor to discuss how youth violence can be reduced in London.
The debate, “Youth violence in London”, takes place in the House of Commons chamber from 5.30pm. Parliamentary Under Secretary for Crime Reduction, James Brokenshire MP, will respond to Mr Umunna’s debate on behalf of the government.
