Sunday, 8 March 2009

Greetings,

Following a successful tour on Sunday 22nd February 2009, Black History Studies have organised another tour of British Museum in London.

All are welcome to the tour of the British Museum, designed by Black History Studies. During this two hour tour, we will take you around the Museum, sharing their detailed knowledge about the artefacts on display.

The tour will take place on Sunday 5th April 2009. There is a choice of two tour times. Option 1 is from 10.30am- 12.30pm and Option 2 is from 2.15pm to 4.15pm. The price for the tour is £10 per person (which covers the tour plus the tour booklet that you will receive at the end of the tour).

Numbers on each tour are limited, so allocation will be on a first come first served basis and we anticipate that there will be a lot of demand for this tour. If you would like to attend the tour of the British Museum, please email us for a booking form.

(Please note that photographs will be taken at this tour that may be used for promotional purposes).

We would appreciate if you could forward this information to all who you believe will be interested.

Regards

Charmaine Simpson
Chief Executive

Unveiling Liverpool’s NPolitical Leaders.
In the week of International Women’s Week and in recognition of the 7 BME women on a groundbreaking scheme, Operation Black Vote prepares to celebrate change in Liverpool.
Jing Liu Deng, Scheme Shadow, said: "It has been a wonderful programme and has opened my eyes to the work of the local political system. I now realise the importance of a Councillor’s role; and through the scheme feel that all the graduates can make a positive change in our community for the betterment of all Liverpool's citizens.”
Operation Black Vote and Liverpool City Council will honour 9 Black and other minority ethnic (BME) trailblazers of democracy with a formal Graduation Ceremony on Monday 9th March at Liverpool’s Town Hall.
The Ceremony marks the completion of a ten month mentoring scheme. The Liverpool Councillor Shadowing Scheme aims to address the deficit of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) political representation in Liverpool City Council and to ensure that BME communities engage with the Council.
The Liverpool Councillor Shadowing Scheme has nurtured 9 BME individuals representing a wealth of untapped political talent in Liverpool. This event also seeks to inform the younger generation about the political and democratic process and the importance of civic participation.
18-24 year olds have been identified as the least likely to take part in the political process and have lower voter registration percentage in comparison to other groups. Preceding the formal Graduation Ceremony will be a youth empowerment event entitled ‘Liverpool’s Obama Generation- The Present and Future’.
The event will discuss, via a Q&A panel, how BME representation can be increased in Liverpool City Council and will seek to inform the younger generation about the importance of civic participation.
Panellists include
Andrew Nembhard (Head of Equal Opportunities, Liverpool City Council),
Gloria Hyatt MBE (founder of the UK's first Black independent school),
Dr. Ray Costello (International Slavery Museum),
Michelle Charters (Kuumba Imani Millennium Centre),
Khadra Mohamed & Sharmake Mohamed (Liverpool Somali Youth Council).
The Graduation Ceremony will follow the youth empowerment event with The Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Liverpool Cllr Rotheram hosting it includes an address by Leader of the Council Cllr Warren Bradley.
The Graduation will be attended by local BME community members, political activists, youth councils and students as well as other distinguished Liverpool figures.
There will be a photo call and the event will be followed by a drinks and canapé reception with the opportunity to meet the next generation of Liverpool’s political leaders in person. The event will take place at 4.15pm to 7.30pm, Monday 9th March 2009, Liverpool Town Hall, Liverpool, L2 3SW.
Simon Woolley, Director of Operation Black Vote said: “I'm convinced that from this historic Shadowing Scheme a new generation of leaders, Councillors, school governors, community organisers will emerge.
Liverpool Council and all those that took part deserve full credit for the extraordinary work they’ve undertaken.”
