Pak opposition parties denounce election delay
KENYA ELECTIONS
Police use water cannons to disperse protestors.Kenya's opposition has declared it would hold a banned mass rally of thousands of its supporters in a central Nairobi park on Friday. "The rally is on for tomorrow," opposition spokesman Salim Lone said in a statement following a day of battles between police and opposition supporters. The rally organized by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) against presidential poll results, was dispersed after police launched a crackdown on demonstrators on Thursday. Kenyan police fired tear gas and warning shots to foil attempts by ODM supporters, mainly from Nairobi's slums, to march to the rally at Uhuru (Independence) Park. A senior police official put the number of demonstrators at around 2,000 and accused them of criminal intent. Defeated presidential challenger Raila Odinga was planning to use the event to present himself to Kenyans as 'the people's president,' amid allegations that the counting process in the December 27 polls was rigged. The disputed poll triggered a wave of violence that has killed more than 340 people and displaced tens of thousands, mainly in western regions of Kenya, since last week. SB/RE
