Butchers cater for cosmopolitan clientele

Chakalaka International Butchers has opened its doors to provide London meat-lovers with a taste of not only South African foods, but meats sourced from all over the world. The name Chakalaka is synonymous in London with the successful South African restaurant in Putney, which is renowned for its tasty South African food and superb meat dishes, such as their marinated ostrich salad, kudu carpaccio, springbok loin and oxtail potjie.
Yet owner Hugh Asher took on the already established South African butchery in Southfields with a fresh aim – to provide meats from around the world to an ever-changing, cosmopolitan palate of the London populous.
Apart from the expected boerewors, dry wors, and South African game (such as kudu, springbok, and ostrich), the butchers has now extended its products to include local British venison, kangaroo, and even Kobe beef, the legendary Japanese delicacy (which has a legendary price-tag to match). For those intimidated by something new, leaflets are available to give invaluable advice on how to prepare and cook the various meats. Failing that, the staff are always on hand to point you in the right direction, says manager Petra van Rooyen.
Chakalaka International Butchers has been going for three months now, but hope to reach clientelle further afield with their online order service, which will be up-and-running on December 24.
The service will be available to meat-lovers across England, who will receive their order within 72 hours.
The butchers currently has a winter special, and various cuts of beef and lamb can be ordered for that special Christmas dinner. For those willing to brave the winter chill, the butchers is famous for its spitbraais, which are set up and prepared by their staff for a hassle-free and special occassion.
Call Chakalaka International Butchers on 020 8788 2959.
