Ethiopia buried its prime minister, Meles Zenawi, on Sunday in
a ceremony attended by African presidents, Orthodox Christian priests and
tens of thousands of mourners lining the streets of the capital
Eulogies praised Meles's "selflessness" and his success in bringing
millions of Ethiopians out of poverty and changing the international
perception of a country once best known for famine.
His coffin was led into Addis Ababa's Meskel Square on a carriage drawn by
horses, with his family dressed in black following behind, as a marching
band played traditional mourning music.
"Even as we argued, whether about economics, democracy, human rights,
regional security or our respective foreign policies, I was always struck by
two things, Meles was consistently reasoned in his judgments and thoughtful
in his decisions," said Susan Rice, the US ambassador to the United
Nations.
