British American Parliamentary Group Exchange Enters 35th Year of Connecting British Members of Parliament with U.S. Members of Congress
The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs announced that six British Members of Parliament will travel to the United States to meet with their counterparts in the U.S. House of Representatives from July 23 through August 1. The British American Parliamentary Group (BAPG) exchange has been connecting representatives from across the Atlantic since 1977.
The program will open in Washington, DC, where the participants will attend meetings with various U.S. government representatives before matching up with their U.S. Congress counterparts. To observe U.S. politics at the local level, the U.S. representatives will host the parliamentarians in their home districts later in the week. As their final destination, the parliamentarians will travel to Boston, Mass., to observe the legislative process at the state level and visit a state capital.
The 2012 United Kingdom participants include Guto Bebb, MP for Aberconwy; Julian Smith, MP for Skipton and Ripon; Nadhim Zahawi, MP for Stratford-on-Avon; Luciana Berger, MP for Liverpool Wavertree; Lilian Greenwood, MP for Nottingham South; and John Healey, MP for Wentworth and Dearne.
The BAPG exchange allows participants to network with counterparts and staffers, examine media in the U.S. political process, discuss the domestic and foreign policy issues that drive politics, and experience U.S. pluralism and regional diversity.
The International Visitor Leadership Program is the U.S. Department of State’s premier professional exchange program, connecting current and emerging foreign leaders with their American counterparts through short-term programs to build mutual understanding on foreign policy issues. Nearly 200,000 distinguished individuals have participated in the program, including 335 current and former Chiefs of State and Heads of Government, and thousands of leaders from the public and private sectors.
