Khalili Lecture Theatre, SOAS

A year ago Ethiopia intervened in Somalia to install Abdullahi Yussuf as head of a Federal Democratic Government. Citing threats by the Union of Islamic Courts to Ethiopian territory, the Ethiopians swiftly overran southern Somalia and took the capital Mogadishu .
Since then resistance to the Ethiopians, and the Africa Union peacekeeping force which is supposed to replace them, has mounted leading to thousands of Somalis fleeing the capital, and creating a humanitarian disaster.
This discussion will analyse what has happened and seek ways towards peace and the restoration of Somali sovereignty.
