N International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action

Today is the United Nations’ International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, which provides opportunity for the world to reflect on both the progress made and the remaining challenges in clearing landmines and unexploded ordnance. These explosive remnants of war still endanger civilians in more than 60 countries. The United States is working closely with partners worldwide to address this serious humanitarian challenge putting innocent people, including many children, at risk.
For more than 20 years, the United States leads the international donor community in promoting peace and security worldwide by partnering with nations to reduce the availability of excess, loosely-secured, or otherwise at-risk small arms and light weapons and munitions, as well as to address humanitarian hazards from landmines and unexploded ordnance in post-conflict countries.
The United States is the world’s single largest financial supporter of conventional weapons destruction, investing over $3.7 billion in more than 100 countries since 1993. In 2019, the United States funded conventional weapons destruction efforts in 58 countries. Our assistance – that of the United States government and all of our global partners – is crucial to building a more safe, secure and prosperous world. Thanks to strong bipartisan funding support from Congress, the Department of State looks forward to continuing this important work with other donor countries, those impacted by conflict, and the brave men and women who work in the field to secure at-risk weapons and munitions and clear landmines and other explosive hazards

7 Apr 2020 Dear Ayoub, The spread of the coronavirus from China to Europe and the rest of the world is engulfing like a tidal wave many of the worthy initiatives that had come out just before, making them inconsequential. It’s not even a month since the EU published its proposal for a new strategy with Africa. Yet, it seems like a year ago and much of what is in the strategy will need to be re-written and adapted to a whole new world. Geert Laporte has taken some of the key ideas that were in that document and looked at how the Corona pandemic will affect them and the EU-Africa relationship more broadly. The virus is moving rapidly across the globe and tackling it will require urgent decisions and especially actions from the international community. Later today, the European Commission will publish its proposal for an EU global response to COVID-19. This will then be discussed by EU foreign and development ministers, who will provide their guidance on the way forward. ECDPM will soon publish a short analysis of the proposed measures and what an EU comprehensive response to COVID-19 could look like. In the meantime, you can have a look at San Bilal and Dirk Willem te Velde’s ideas on how the EU should refocus development priorities to address the socioeconomic impacts of this pandemic. One of the many needed responses to this crisis will be to develop food systems that can resist these and other types of shocks. Paulina Bizzotto Molina, Valeria Pintus, Koen Dekeyser and Cecilia D’Alessandro explain how understanding the challenges and opportunities within a food system is crucial to building more resilient societies. 2020 P3 Impact Award Application Deadline Extended

The U.S. Department of State Office of Global Partnerships (GP), along with Concordia and the University of Virginia Darden School of Business Institute for Business in Society, has extended the application deadline for the seventh annual P3 Impact Award until April 27^th, 2020. The P3 Impact Award was created by the three partners in 2014 to recognize and honor best practices of public-private partnerships that are improving communities in the most impactful ways.
Stakeholders of this year’s finalists will receive the following: tickets to attend and publicly present their partnerships at the Concordia Annual Summit, to be held September 20-22, 2020, in front of P3 Impact Award judges and a live audience of esteemed industry, government, and civil society leaders; promotion of each partnership’s excellence in publicity and other media coverage, including social media campaigns; and a feature in the Darden School’s Ideas to Action website. Additionally, select early-stage partnerships that do not advance as finalists will be invited to participate in the inaugural P3 Impact Award Accelerator, a special partnership accelerator program designed to advance and support partnerships through mentorship, expert guidance, exposure, and networking.
The winning partnership for the 2020 competition will be announced at the 2020 Concordia Annual Summit. Along with receiving the same benefits as the other finalists, the stakeholders of the winning partnership will receive recognition on the main stage at the Concordia Annual Summit; one year of Concordia Patron Membership; a scholarship to attend a week-long Executive Education course at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business; and the opportunity to be subject of a case study published by Darden Business Publishing.
Applications will be reviewed by an independent panel of judges. Judges will review the applications based on the partnership’s measurable impact, economic and social benefits, financial effectiveness, innovation, and scalability. Five finalists will then be selected and notified in July.
