SOUTHERN AFRICAN STATES CONCLUDE ANNUAL REVIEW AND PLANNING OF JOINT BOUNDARY REAFFIRMATION IN DAR ES SALAAM

Dar es Salaam, 05 December 2014; Official delegates from Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique have concluded their annual review and planning meeting for the reaffirmation of their international boundaries. The annual meeting, which took place from 1 to 5 December 2014, in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania also witnessed a successful exchange of best practices between the participants from Great Lakes and West Africa.

The three countries, which have been engaged with the African Union Border Programme (AUBP) since 2008, were each represented by five members from relevant ministries dedicated to border issues.

Speaking during the Opening Session, the Permanent Secretary of the Tanzania’s Ministry of Lands, Alphayo Kidata emphasised the importance of implementing the Border Programme effectively in order to secure sustainable peace and development. “To ensure the safety and security of future generations and in order to shift our focus more towards the development agenda, it is incumbent upon us to resolve our border disputes through greater cooperation and dialogue, “ said Mr Kidata.

The meeting reflected on the advancements achieved by Southern African Member States, in border delimitation and demarcation throughout the year. Beyond review and planning, the meeting provided a platform for the participating Member States to exchange experiences and lessons learnt arising from their joint border management activities. 

One of the highlights of the meeting was the official handover of data from an aerial survey (LiDAR survey), which was carried out along the western Malawi-Mozambique boundary to the respective Heads of Delegations. The 420,000 USD survey to determine the watershed line between the two countries, was financed by the German Federal Foreign Office via GIZ. The line forms the basis of delimitation and demarcation of the border between the two countries and will enable them to proceed with demarcation in 2015.

Nollywood star wins political seat

Nigerian actor Desmond Elliot who has starred in over two hundred Nollywood films has won a seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly, representing Surulere state constituency.

The actor beat Kabiru Lawal to win the seat on Tuesday however other candidates have called foul claiming that there was favouritism, with some rumours going as far as saying that Lawal stepped down after pleadings from party leaders.

On why he ventured from the Nigerian big screen to Nigerian politics, Elliot said that he was tired of the ‘pathetic’ state that Nigeria is currently in.

“The current situation is very pathetic. I feel God has helped me thus far and I want to give back through politics that will be favourable to the youths,” he stated.

“The worst part of our national life is that the level of corruption has not allowed youths to understand what it means to live a meaningful life. Just because of lack of knowledge of what to do, we are being side tracked.

“There are no jobs, and issues like these lead to frustration. A whole lot needs to be done on agriculture, every state in Nigeria needs to see how it can contribute to nation building. There’s a lot that needs to be done.”

Elliot was not the only Nigerian celebrity to set their sights on a political seat this year. Gospel Singer Kenny Saint Best ran for the seat in Ikeja however she lost to Folajimi Mohammed, son of APC chieftain and National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed.

Unique Ugandan Ballet in aid of shell-shocked child soldiers

This weekend,  a unique collaboration between charity I Am Somebody’s Child Soldier and Uganda National Contemporary Ballet will take place at WAC arts center in London.

The performance, choreographed by Valerie Miquel, “depicts the daily struggles and woes of a female child soldier living through war and anguish in Uganda”, an unfortunate and horrifying feat that thousands of children, many of whom are kidnapped from their homes, are forced to endure.

In 2012, the horrific realities of the war in Uganda, were brought to international attention, when details of Ugandan Wr Lors, Joseph Kony’s activities emerged.

Despite this, little has been done to combat the problem, and very few people are aware of the irreparable damage done to children as young as 10, who are forced to kill or be killed.

Charity organisation I Am Somebody’s Child Soldiers hopes to right this wrong by “empowering child soldiers all over the world so each one of them can live a powerful life free from mental trauma.”

Poetry, live music and talks by human rights activists will also feature as part of what is set to be an amazing event for a worth cause, led by  Ugandan National Contemporary Ballet, which was established in 2007 , and  has toured across Europe and Africa with 23 incredible pieces to their name.

Filmmaker Ryan Murdock's debut feature film has been in the making for nearly 3 years, as he intimately documented Mr Ortiz's transformation during Obama's first term and the 2012 election season. Murdock has rolled out this story in multiple parts - first as a 36-minute radio piece for NPR's This American Life, then as a short film for The New York Times. The 90-minute feature documentary reveals a host of new characters; a manager who pushes Louis hard to "become Obama,"  a seasoned "Bill Clinton" who dispenses advice, and a hard-working "Mitt Romney" who bets it all on his newfound career. Murdock captures unexpectedly hilarious moments along this Twilight-Zone-esque campaign trail while delving deep into the question of what it means to be someone you're not.

Miss happiness is  in  town in time for the festive season, the she  will experience the famous Christmas spirit that can be found in England's capital city. For a little over 3 weeks, the contestants will experience the wonder of England's vibrant multicultural metropolis whilst she  takes part in the Miss World Challenge Events and prepare herself  for the Big Final!

Events start from 20th November, culminating in the Grand Final on 14th December. She  is  in  high  spirit and  for  the  first  time  ,  Tanzania  has  a  big  chance  of becoming  one  of  the  big  three.

Simply download the Miss World App, and you will find you have three slots available for your vote. Once you have decided who your top three are, you can lock in your vote and voila!, you have helped your favourite contestants on their way to being the People’s Choice Award Winner! The winner of the People’s Choice Award is announced during the latter stages of the Miss World Final, and the winner, if she is not already selected, will join the final few contestants on stage. These contestants will then face the judges questions before the winner of Miss World 2014 is announced!

How many votes do I get?

This year, you will be allowed one set of three votes, with a bonus set of three votes if you choose to subscribe to the app, which also includes the full Miss World TV coverage of the competition. The most votes any one contestant can receive from an individual is 2 votes. Each set of votes must be for 3 different contestants.

Meeting of the Ministerial Committee of C10 of the African women’s decade and the Steering Committee for the Fund of the African women

Cairo, 3^rd December 2014, Wednesday started a two days meeting of the Ministerial Committee of C10 of the African women’s decade and the Steering Committee for the Fund of the African women.

The first day meeting is taking place in a the context of reviewing and approving the 2014 call for the proposal under the theme “5” Climate Change and Environment.

The second day meeting will discuss the Fund for the African Women Management. The 10^th Committee of Ten is composed of Ministers from Member sStates (Congo, Tchad, Cote D’Ivoire, Malawi, Cape Verde,  Eritrea, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Mauritania, Libya), and members of the Steering Committee of the African Fund for Wwomen (Algeria, Benin, Cote D’Ivoire, Cameroon, Djibouti, Tchad, Lesotho, Tunisia, Egypt, Nigeria). 

At the opening session, speaking on behalf of Her Excellency Dr Nkosazama Dlamini Zuma,  the Acting Head of the Permanent Delegation of the African Union to the League of Arab States indicated that the African Union has taken global leadership in the promotion of gender equality and women's empowerment and that  in this regardsHeads of State and Government adopted the Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality (SDGEA) on 2004. and that by Decision No: Assembly/AU/dec.277(XVI) and EX.CL/dec.539 (XVI), the Heads of State and Government had launched the African Women Decade (AWD) . It is in this perspective the African Union Commission had drawn Agenda 2063. To achieve the objectives of this agenda, the Heads of States and Governments honored women by declaring the year 2015 "the year of women empowerment and development towards Africa’s Agenda 2063".which is a great confidence and responsibility placed on our shoulders. 

The Au Ministerial Committee is expected:

-To examined and approve the project proposal from Member states for funding.

-Discuss and approve the publication on the call for the proposal for 2014 theme

-Discuss the way forward on the management of the find for Afric

an Women.

Well, thank you very much for that, Federica. I’m delighted to be here with the high representative and pleased to be in the company of Vice President Sefcovic and Commissioner Canete and Vice-Minister De Vincenti. I’m glad to be back here in this room where we’ve had a couple of meetings already. Last year we were here and we had a good session.

I am not accompanied today by Secretary Moniz. This is not the secretary of energy. He is the acting assistant secretary of energy, and I don’t know how he got here and Moniz did not. (Laughter.) But Secretary Moniz’s flight was canceled, and so he’s gone promptly to the President and he’s asked to be secretary of transportation instead. (Laughter.) Unfortunately, he couldn’t make it, and I’m sorry for that, because as good as the assistant secretary will be, he really knows his stuff, and frankly, he’s got enormous expertise so he will be missed.

But I’m pleased to be here with all of you, and let me begin by applauding the tremendous leadership of the EU in helping to reach a gas deal with respect to Ukraine. That is a very important deal, and it is very successful with respect to the long-term situation. It’s important. And part of our meeting today is really to talk about providing a sustainable energy plan for Europe – for actually more than Europeans – so that all of us can deal not just with issues like climate change, but the economy and the stability of the economy and the stability of the supply. And obviously, it’s not a good idea to depend anywhere in the world on one source. There are disruption and vast implications.

We support major U.S.-EU energy sector reform. That’s part of what we’re going to talk about here today. We think there can be increased domestic production. There’s much to be done on energy efficiency. There’s also an enormous amount to be done in the transformation to a clean energy economy. In fact, the clean energy economy represents the single largest market in the world. And the market that made America particularly wealthy – and I say that advisedly and measured against the 1920s when we didn’t have income tax and people made a lot of money – we actually saw more people make more money in the 1990s from a $1 trillion market that had one billion users. It was the high tech market. The energy market that we are looking at today globally is a $6 trillion market today with 4 to 5 billion users today, and it will rise to some 9 billion users over the course of the next 30 years. It is the largest – you can call it the mother of all markets if you want. And its future is not in coal unless somebody can figure out how to burn it absolutely cleanly. Its future is going to be in clean energy.

So that’s what we’re here to talk about. We want to, obviously, deal with the question – a more prosaic question of how we deal with Ukraine, how we deal with the energy demands of the moment to get through a certain crisis. We want to talk about long-term energy security, which depends on investment in the future. We clearly want to meet our responsibility with respect to climate change. The United States has tried to exhibit leadership together with China as a beginning, as a first step to lay some markers down to encourage people to make the most out of Lima in the next days, and then to make the most out of Paris next year. Because it is clear from all of the scientific evidence that we are behind where we need to be, and catching up is not easy.

So this is our challenge. Technology and our collaboration within the technology sector could be an enormous kick-start to both of our economies and obviously bring us all long-term stability and significant rewards.

I’d just close by saying that I’ve been in public policy now most of my life, 30 – almost 30 years in the U.S. Senate, and now serving as Secretary, and before the Senate, lieutenant governor of a state. I’ve seen many, many debates over public policy issues, and many of them present you with a tension. There’s an up and there’s a down, and you try to fight your way through that tension. When it comes to energy choices, I have never seen an issue that presents as many upsides and as little downside.

People keep saying, well, it’s going to be too expensive to do this, or this may dislocate the economy. It’s just not true. The fact is that the benefits to health, the benefits to – the benefits to health, the savings of hospitals and hospitalization for particulate-imbued diseases or other enhanced diseases as a result of breathing capacity, the enhancement to the environment, the preservation of long-term environment, the diminishment of carbon dioxide, the diminishment of the damaging effects of acidification on the oceans and the impact that is incalculable on species, on coral reefs, on spawning grounds – I mean, you could run the list – the impact on energy security for nations, the lack of conflict as a consequence, the impact on populations that don’t have to move – all of these things are key.

So when you add it all up, the pluses of what we’re talking about here today are just enormous, and we hope that that becomes more and more self-evident as we go forward. And Federica, thanks for hosting us. We appreciate it.

An aide to a Republican congressman has resigned after her Facebook post criticising President Barack Obama's daughters touched off a backlash. Elizabeth Lauten, communications director to Republican Stephen Fincher of Tennessee, said Malia Obama, 16, and Sasha, 13, should have shown more "class" at a turkey-pardoning ceremony last week at the White House, a presidential tradition for the harvest holiday of Thanksgiving, when Americans partake in a feast that features the turkey as its centrepiece. She criticised the girls' casual dress and their behaviour - shrugs and eye-rolling greeted by most commentators with laughter at teenagers being teenagers. Lauten wrote that the girls should "respect the part you play," and added: "Then again your mother and father don't respect their positions very much, or the nation for that matter, so I'm guessing you're coming up a little short in the 'good role model department.'" Original post deleted Lauten later apologised for the comments and deleted the original post, which drew harsh criticism across social media. Jessica Carter, chief of staff for Fincher, said on Monday that Lauten resigned. Carter had no additional comment on a personnel matter. After the post became the topic of conversation on a variety websites, Lauten issued an apology, saying "many hours of prayer," conversations with her family and a re-reading of her words made her reconsider the post. "When I first posted on Facebook I reacted to an article and I quickly judged the two young ladies in a way that I would never have wanted to be judged myself as a teenager," Lauten told the Commercial Appeal of Memphis in an email. "Please know, those judgmental feelings truly have no place in my heart. "Furthermore, I'd like to apologise to all of those who I have hurt and offended with my words." The White House has not commented on the aide's Facebook post.

We would like to invite you to the annual year end gathering as a follow up and a preparation for next year. One of the central themes of the development of the Universal Peace Federation (UPF) is the Peace Council that was proposed at the founding of the UPF as a place for people from many backgrounds to join together to discuss goals and strategies that can influence a nation or a city in a good direction. It was proposed as a forum for the exchange of ideas and experiences.

The Peace Council was proposed as the forum to bring together national level people of many backgrounds in order to pool their efforts. We intend to plan for 2015 for the projects and activities that we feel passionate about and that correspond to the UPF ethos. UPF in the UK is known for holding events and activities such as commemorating special UN Days such as Genocide and Holocaust Day, International Family Day, International Women's Day, Interfaith Week, and International Peace Day. We are also known for human rights events, interfaith activities and the development of Youth UPF. We are a partner of Parliament Week and Youth UPF held a debate on Lowering the Voting Age to Sixteen during Parliament Week 2014. We have held a series of events to raise awareness of human rights issues of sexual violence in eastern DR Congo and Conflict Minerals.

We will be having our Peace Council on December 6th 2014 in 43 Lancaster Gate. You will be joining activists from different parts of the UK. There will be a number of notable speakers present on the day who have been part of our regular activities throughout the year.

Annual Membership is only £30 if you join before the Peace Council (or at the reception desk on the day), where entrance to the Peace Council will be £5 instead of £12 to cover lunch costs. Otherwise it will cost £12 to attend the Peace Council.
